GALVESTON — A man convicted of scratching, biting and kicking two officers at the Texas City Jail was sentenced Thursday to 50 years in prison.
A jury deliberated for less than 15 minutes before finding Dennis Steele, 33, guilty of two charges of assaulting a public servant, according to the Galveston County District Attorney’s Office.
Steele was arrested on Nov. 6 and taken to the Texas City jail to be booked on suspicion of driving while intoxicated.
Police said Steele went to sleep on the floor of a holding cell, then attacked a jailer and a patrol officer who went to wake the suspected drunken driver.
Steele was accused of injuring the two officers, who were able to subdue him with help from a third officer.
Steele had previously been convicted of 10 felonies, ranging from evading arrest to the manufacture and delivery of a controlled substance.
The case was prosecuted by Elizabeth Cuchens.
