FRIENDSWOOD — A man accused of stealing a 72-year-old woman’s purse Tuesday in front of a Friendswood grocery store and the alleged wheelman were arrested after shoppers and H-E-B employees came to the woman’s aid, police said.
The woman was loading groceries into her car at the H-E-B in the 700 block of West Parkwood Avenue at about 3 p.m. when she saw her purse was missing from her shopping cart, according to Friendswood Police Department.
After the woman screamed, a 23-year-old shopper and two grocery store employees began chasing a man who was running across the parking lot with a purse in hand, police said.
The man threw the purse into a black sedan that sped away as the pursuing good Samaritan grabbed the suspected purse-snatcher and held him until police arrived.
A license plate number, description of the vehicle and the use of a stolen credit card at a nearby gas station led police to an apartment complex at 15603 Gulf Freeway on Wednesday, where a second man was arrested, according to the news release.
Ray Patterson Jr., 33, of League City, the alleged purse snatcher, and Emmanuel Bernard Harris, 24, of Texas City, the alleged wheelman were each charged with one count of aggravated robbery.
Harris was being held at the Galveston County Jail on an $80,000 bond. Patterson was being held on a $40,000 bond.
