GALVESTON — Today has been named Mike Evans Day in Galveston to celebrate the Ball High grad’s selection in the NFL draft.

Ball High and businesses on the island are being asked to wear Ball High’s purple and gold, Texas A&M’s maroon or the colors of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to support Evans.

“He always kind of talked about Galveston and how people supported him along the way, and we think it’s a fantastic story of a student from the island succeeding,” said Johnston Farrow, a spokesman for the school district.

Farrow said 29 players from Ball High have gone on to play in the NFL, but none was selected so high in the draft.

Evans’s high school basketball coach, Jearld Temple, couldn’t be happier for him.

“I’m just really proud,” Temple said. “The school and community are really excited.”
