WEBSTER — Police Chief Ray Smiley, a veteran law enforcement officer of 38 years, died Tuesday afternoon from complications associated with a long illness. He was 67.
“Not only have we lost a friend but a great boss as well,” said Thomas Claunch, assistant chief of police.
Smiley began his career with the Webster Police Department in 1999 and was appointed chief in 2004.
“I’ve been a cop for 28 years, and he is by far the best chief I’ve ever worked for,” Claunch said. “He was a true professional, and he will be sorely missed.”
Simley is survived by his wife, children and grandchildren. No memorial services had been scheduled as of late Tuesday afternoon, Claunch said.
