GALVESTON — A bevy of boats have come to the aid of the Carnival Triumph cruise ship after an engine fire Sunday left it without electricity or propulsion 150 miles off the coast of the Yucatán Peninsula.

Two tug boats are scheduled to connect with the Triumph today to pull the 102,000 ton ship to the nearest port in Progreso, Mexico, according to a news release from the Carnival cruise line. It’s expected to arrive late Wednesday.

Passengers will then board a chartered aircraft Carnival is in the process of arranging to fly back to the United States.

A technical crew has gradually restored auxiliary power to operate some basic hotel functions, but food service was so limited on Sunday that the Carnival Elation connected with the ship to provide food and other provisions, according to the release.

Most of the toilets and showers on the ship are unusable.

A team consisting of additional technical crew and guest service personnel will also arrive at the boat later today.

Concerned family and loved ones of guests and crew may call 888-290-5095 or 305-406-5534.

Just out of curiosity, if the engine power was lost on Thursday, why did it take until Monday to arrange for a tow to port? Once it became obvious that repairs would take more than a few hours, shouldn't they have started thinking about the logistics of keeping 4200 people floating in the middle of the gulf? Progresso may not be quite as nice as the port they were planning on going to, but I would think you'd have a better chance of provide "Hotel"-like accomodations if you are able to plug in for some auxilliary power.

I can understand, to a point, the desire to attempt to be independent of outside assistance, but wasn't that the type of stubborness that delayed the evacuation of the Costa Concordia until it partially sank and grounded? I would have thought that Carnival would have learned something about stubborness from that.
