Mardi Gras goes 'Pop'

An art car is parked in the Galveston Island Convention Center on Thursday for the 18th annual San Luis Salute hosted by Paige and Tilman Fertitta.

GALVESTON — It’s become the biggest of all the Mardi Gras Galveston balls and is the single hardest ticket to get. This year is no different as the San Luis Salute goes “Pop.”

Matching the theme of the Knights of Momus salute to pop art, a crowd of more than 1,200 is sure to be wowed. The event, which benefits the construction fund of the Jennie Sealy Hospital tower at the University of Texas Medical Branch, is known for being over the top.

As is the norm, the look and special guest entertainers are kept secret until the big reveal at about 9 p.m. tonight. The Daily News got a sneak peek of the ballroom at the Island Convention Center on Thursday.

Check out the Mardi Gras blog at tonight for a closer look at the social event of Mardi Gras.
