GALVESTON — Police are searching for a man accused of assaulting a woman and attempting to take her purse as she walked to work in downtown Galveston on Thursday morning.

The would-be robber approached the woman from behind and attempted to take her handbag near the 23rd and Postoffice streets shortly after 9 a.m. Thursday, police Lt. Michael Gray said.

When the woman resisted, the man struck her with his fist, causing minor injuries, Gray said.

He then fled, without any of the woman’s property, Gray said.

Joyce McLean, the owner of the Head to Footsies store on The Strand, said the woman was on her way to work when the attack happened.

The woman was shaken up, but was not badly injured, McLean said.

She said attempted robberies are an uncommon occurrence in downtown Galveston.

“I think this is an isolated incident,” McLean said.

The thwarted robber is described as a thin white male with short red hair, between the ages of 17 and 19.

He was wearing a navy blue T-shirt and blue jeans at the time of the attempted robbery, police said.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Galveston Police Department.
