HITCHCOCK — A man accused of striking a Hitchcock resident in the head with a golf club was convicted of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon Friday.

Joe Mata, 23, was arrested in September 2013 after he was involved in an incident outside his home, where he was “wielding a golf club and creating a disturbance,” according to prosecutors.

Jurors heard testimony from neighbors who said they tried to calm Mata down, but Mata swung the golf club, according to a statement from the Galveston County District Attorney’s Office.

A neighbor testified that “it sounded like a bomb” when the club struck another man’s head.

Judge John Ellisor of the state 122nd District Court will assess Mata’s punishment after a hearing set for Sept. 5.
