HIGH ISLAND — A witness to an apparent car theft shot at the suspects, possibly grazing one of the men, authorities said Thursday.

The witness saw a couple of men trying to pry open the door of a vehicle shortly before 1 a.m. Wednesday at an RV park in the 1900 block of Fourth Street in High Island, said Maj. Ray Tuttoilmondo of the Galveston County Sheriff’s Office.

The witness saw the men leave in a white Dodge pickup, and he followed them to the beach, where he called authorities and confronted them, Tuttoilmondo said.

The men took the truck back to the RV park, but once there, one of the men pulled a rifle on the witness, Tuttoilmondo said.

“The witness here had his own guns,” Tuttoilmondo said.

“He got the drop on them, pulled and fired at least one round. One of the suspects may have been grazed. They took off and ran.”

Authorities had no reports of injuries, but deputies believe they’ve identified the men, Tuttoilmondo said.

Deputies are also investigating whether three other reports in the area are related, Tuttoilmondo said.
