FRIENDSWOOD — A Gulf Freeway chase ended Friday with two people detained in connection with a car burglary at Baybrook Mall, authorities said.

An off-duty Houston police officer saw the suspects and summoned officers who responded to the mall, which has a Friendswood address but is in the Houston Police Department’s Jurisdiction, said Friendswood police Chief Robert Wieners.

The chase of a Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck began shortly after 3 p.m., said Victor Senties, a spokesman for Houston police.

The pursuit went south on the Gulf Freeway but then headed north toward Houston. One of the suspects got out of the truck at FM 2351 and fled into a field, Wieners said.

A Houston Police Department helicopter spotted a tree-cutting crew, which alerted Houston and Friends-

wood police to the suspect. Authorities stopped the pickup and detained the second suspect just north of FM 2359.

Houston police had no immediate information Friday afternoon on whether charges were filed, as the case remained under investigation.
