JAMAICA BEACH — A monthlong undercover operation ended with the arrest of a Jamaica Beach man accused of agreeing to pay an officer $2,000 to have sex with a child, authorities said Thursday.
Bail for John Todd McCabe, 51, was set at $100,000 on a charge of sexual performance of a child after his 3:40 p.m. Wednesday arrest at a park in Bacliff, Capt. Barry Cook of the Galveston County Sheriff’s Office said.
A person with knowledge of the matter contacted the sheriff’s office with information that led to the investigation, which lasted more than a month. An undercover officer began communicating with McCabe through text messages and phone calls, Cook said.
One of those communications led to the Wednesday afternoon meeting at Spillway Park in the 5500 block of W. Bayshore Drive. The officer pretended to be the grandmother of the child, Cook said.
Authorities accused McCabe of arranging to pay $2,000 to have sex with a 10-year-old. McCabe was also accused of giving the officer $200 for a hotel room. He was arrested after leaving the park.
The sheriff’s office recorded the meeting and said McCabe was cooperative and gave a statement while in custody.
