NASSAU BAY — Authorities on Monday released the name of a Houston woman who accidently drowned while swimming in a Clear Lake lagoon over the weekend.

Witnesses reported Erika Cardenas, 33, was aboard a 30-foot Wellcraft pleasure boat with several other people when she went swimming Saturday night, Nassau Bay Police Chief Joey Cashiola said.

Cardenas was swimming in Nassau Bay Lagoon when she went underwater and never resurfaced, Cashiola said. The police department received a call reporting a possible drowning at 6:20 p.m.

Firefighters from Nassau Bay, Baytown, League City and Webster had assistance from the U.S. Coast Guard in searching for Cardenas.

Divers with the Baytown Fire Department found Cardenas’ body in 18 feet of water, Cashiola said.

The Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences retrieved Cardenas’ body from the 18200 block of Nassau Bay Drive. Roxanne Mena, a spokeswoman for the institute, listed drowning as the cause of death.

Police investigators don’t suspect foul play, and are awaiting autopsy results to determine if alcohol was a factor in the accident, Cashiola said.

Did any kink of sunken debris in the water hold her down?[sad]
