HITCHCOCK — The contestants at this year’s barbecue cook-off at the Galveston County Fair and Rodeo have been on the waiting list eight years to prove that their recipes are the best.
The 37th annual cook-off begins today with grilled chicken wings at 1:45 p.m. and pulled pork at 6:15.
Cook-off committee member Travis Bergh said the event is worth attending just to watch.
“Some of the cookers get really loud and crazy when they find out they’ve made the second cut,” he said.
Fourteen tables of six judges will determine which teams have mastered the art of barbecue. This year there will be 276 entries.
“It’s always fun to see this massive mob of people who are all here seeking the same thing,” Bergh said. “The reactions of the select few who make it is really a spectacle worth watching.”
Gates open at 10 a.m. for the cook-off and at 4 p.m. for the fair. Tickets are $12 for adults and $5 for children 6 to 12 and seniors. Entry is free with a valid military ID.
