LA MARQUE —A 4-year-old girl was found at the bottom of a swimming pool on Sunday night and died in an apparent accidental drowning, police said.

The Galveston County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the child as Stephanie Smith of Spring.

The girl and her mother were attending a child’s birthday party with 30 to 40 other parents and children in the 800 block of Volney Street, Spruill said.

The child wandered out of sight and was missing for about 30 minutes before she was found in the pool, Spruill said. Emergency personnel arrived shortly after 9:20 p.m. and performed CPR while rushing the girl to Mainland Medical Center, he said.

She was pronounced dead at the hospital.

There were no signs of foul play, and no alcohol involved at the party, Spruill said.

Police do not expect charges to be filed.
