BAYOU VISTA — Residents escaped an early morning house fire that could have been caused by the heating system in the attic, a fire official said Friday.
No people were hurt in the 1 a.m. Wednesday blaze in the 700 block of Marlin St., but some pets were lost in the fire, said Greg Harrington, president of the Board of Directors for the Bayou Vista Volunteer Fire Department.
Firefighters arrived to find flames shooting through the roof. The fire started in the attic. Other agencies from Santa Fe, Hitchcock, La Marque and Tiki Island assisted in putting out the fire.
“The house was a total loss,” Harrington said. “It appears accidental.”
Harrington said he believed the fire displaced two people. The specific cause of the blaze remained under investigation, he said.
“This is the first building we’ve lost since (Hurricane) Ike,” Harrington said, noting the others were minor fires since the storm’s Sept. 13, 2008, landfall.
