LEAGUE CITY — Following up on the success of the last time  it sold discounted rain barrels that came with a rebate on residents’ water bills, the city is once again offering its rain barrel/water bill rebate program.

Starting Monday, residents can order one or two of a new batch of 200 rain barrels. The 50-gallon rain barrels collect rainwater, which can then be used for lawn or flower garden watering.

City utility officials estimate that during the summer, more than half of a household’s water use is for landscaping purposes.

Those who order the $65 rain barrels also qualify for a $25 rebate on their water bills. The offer runs until all 200 of the rain barrels are sold or until Sept. 28.

The rain barrels will be available for pickup Oct. 4.

In April, when the city last offered the special, about 200 of the rain barrels were sold.

“We were very pleased to see the community response to the program,” League City Mayor Tim Paulissen said. “Water is one of our most precious natural resources, and we encourage those who are interested in recycling and conservation, who missed out on the first program, to get involved this time.”
