GALVESTON — Port of Galveston officials today plan a ceremonial groundbreaking for a downtown transit center.

The Galveston Downtown Transportation Terminal, on the northeast corner of The Strand and 25th Street, will cost a little more than $6 million to build.

The terminal, which would take up half a block in The Strand National Historic Landmark District, would house an information center, 170-space parking garage, public restrooms and a city bus terminal and connect by ramp to Shearn Moody Plaza, 25th Street and Harborside.

The ceremony, which is open to the public, is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. at the building site.

The project is expected to be completed in October.
