HITCHCOCK — The Galveston County Fair and Rodeo’s Junior Livestock Auction will be at 6 p.m. today.

Steers, hogs, lambs, goats, chickens, turkeys and rabbits will go the highest bidder; proceeds will go back to the child who raised the animal.

“It’s what they use to pay for their projects, pay their feed bills off and hopefully use some of it to pay for next year’s projects,” fair President Paul Tibaldo said.

At auction, a steer could bring anywhere from $2,000 to $25,000, which is what the Grand Champion steer was sold for in 2013.

“We had a record year last year, and hopefully, we can do it again this year,” he said.

Families and business owners from all across Galveston County have attended the event for years.

“We’ve had buyers that have been with us since I was showing here,” Tibaldo said. “The people keep coming back out and supporting the kids.”

In order to participate in the auction, buyers need to sign up before 6 p.m.
