SAN LEON — Authorities on Tuesday asked for the public’s help in solving the killing of a San Leon man, who was found dead after being shot on New Year’s Day in New Orleans.
Joseph Istre, 47, was found dead on a sidewalk of a gunshot wound to his chest shortly after 10 a.m. in the 2300 block of North Prieur Street, New Orleans Police Department spokesman Garry Flot said.
Flot reported no arrests in the killing.
Elizabeth Istre of Dickinson said her father was staying in hotels in New Orleans while working, either laying concrete or doing construction. Relatives last saw him at Christmas time, she said.
“From what I heard, he was in a bad part of town, and they just robbed him and shot him in the chest once,” Istre said. “He died instantly.”
Istre was born in Galveston and lived in San Leon with his daughter her entire life.
Investigators are working to identify anyone involved in the shooting and a motive.
Homicide detective Elizabeth Garcia is in charge of the investigation and can be reached at 504-658-5300.
Police also asked anyone with information on the killing to call Crime Stoppers at 1-877-903-7867. Authorities announced up to a $2,500 cash reward for information leading to an arrest in Istre’s killing.
