Authorities have identified a 59-year-old contractor killed Friday while operating a backhoe at Texas International Terminals, 4800 Port Industrial Road in Galveston.
Dale McDonald, of Louisiana, died after the backhoe fell over and trapped him, authorities said.
McDonald had worked for a company hired to stabilize the ground for a new tank to be installed at Texas International Terminals, company President Todd Sullivan said.
Occupational Safety and Health Administration investigators were at the site Monday, spokesman Juan Rodriguez said. The agency released no other information.
"We take extra precaution in establishing and following safety — we take it very seriously," Sullivan said.
"I would characterize it as an unfortunate accident because the work being performed was very routine for this type of industry."
Galveston Fire Department and Galveston Area Ambulance Authority, as well as workers for the company and contractor all tried to save McDonald, officials said.
Emergency medical personnel took McDonald to John Sealy Hospital in Galveston, where he was pronounced dead.
Galveston County Medical Examiner's Office investigators were still investigating the exact cause of McDonald's death.
An Occupational Safety and Health Administration spokesman did not return a phone call Monday.
