A man who told police he would rather return to prison than live in a halfway house was arrested and charged with felony burglary Friday after he was caught breaking into a city-owned truck, police said.

The incident occurred Friday in the 1100 block of Bayou Road in La Marque, according to a probable cause affidavit.

City employees called police after surrounding the man as he was breaking into a Dodge pickup truck, according to the affidavit.

Officers detained the man, who they recognized as a resident of a halfway house in the city, according to the affidavit. The man told police it was “difficult” to live in the house, and that he’d rather go back to prison, according to the affidavit.

Charles Latham, 40, of La Marque, was arrested and charged with burglary of vehicles with two or more previous convictions. His bond was set at $60,000. He was still in custody at the Galveston County jail on Tuesday afternoon, according to jail records.
