A section of 51st Street between Harborside Drive and Broadway will close for 10 days this month while contractors reconstruct the road.
The street will be closed at the base of the 51st Street bridge, a major thoroughfare to Pelican Island and Texas A&M University at Galveston, spokeswoman Jaree Fortin said.
All lanes will be closed between 8 a.m. March 12 and 7 p.m. March 22, Fortin said. Drivers will be detoured along 37th Street, she said.
Construction on 51st Street began in 2017 and is expected to be completed in April, Fortin said. The $1.3 million project will replace underground utilities and widen the road, Fortin said. The utility work has already been completed, according to the city.
But improvements to island roads aren’t expected to stop anytime soon — the city has planned $25 million in 2018 for street repairs and a total of $66 million in work through 2022.
