Galveston Shrimp Fest to close streets through Sunday

Several Galveston streets will be closed beginning today for The Galveston Island Wild Texas Shrimp Festival.

Starting 6 a.m., 23rd Street from Harborside Drive to Mechanic Street, and 22nd Street from Strand to Mechanic, will be closed to traffic.

They will reopen on Sunday.

Parking will be prohibited on the north side of Strand from 22nd to 24th streets starting 6 a.m. today.

On Saturday, some streets will be closed for a 5K road race. Downtown portions of Mechanic Street, Church Street, 23rd Street and 25th Street will be closed from 6 a.m. to 11 a.m.

Mechanic, Church and 17th streets will be closed to through traffic during the race.

Police officers will provide traffic control and assist with vehicles needing to cross at some intersections.

The festival includes a shrimp gumbo cook-off, gumbo tasting, live music and the road race.
