A Nassau Bay police officer shot a man Sunday after being assaulted during a traffic stop, police Chief Kenneth Campbell said.

The man who was shot was identified as Aldo Rene Rodriguez, 31. He has been charged with two counts of assault on a public servant, a third-degree felony, according to the Nassau Bay Police Department.

The officer responded to a disturbance call about 5:30 a.m. Sunday at the Hilton Houston NASA Clear Lake hotel, 3000 E. NASA Parkway, Campbell said. A hotel security guard said a man had assaulted him and pointed out a person driving out of the parking lot onto NASA Parkway, Campbell said.

The officer stopped the vehicle in the 2300 block of NASA Parkway. The driver refused to get out of the car and became confrontational, Campbell said.

The officer shot the driver with a Taser but the incident escalated into a fight during which the driver grabbed the officer’s throat, Campbell said.

The driver also grabbed the officer’s radio, leaving him unable to call for help, Campbell said.

The officer “in fear for his life, drew his duty weapon and fired one single round striking the suspect in his upper thigh area,” Campbell said.

A passing motorist aided the officer, and the two secured the driver in handcuffs. The officer and motorist provided assistance to the driver’s wound and requested Emergency Medical Service, Campbell said.

The driver was transported to Clear Lake Regional Hospital with a single gunshot wound, Campbell said.

The department is conducting a joint investigation with the Harris County District Attorney’s Office, Campbell said.
