A Port of Galveston police officer shot and killed a dog Tuesday morning, after witnessing it attack another dog on a League City street, police said.

The shooting happened at 6:45 a.m. in the 800 block of Center Pointe Drive, League City Police spokesman Kelly Williamson said.

A woman was walking her golden retriever down the street when an unleashed pit bull attacked. The port officer, who was off duty at the time, was driving by and saw the attack, Williamson said.

The officer got out of his vehicle and shot the pit bull twice, Williamson said. The dog was injured and later euthanized.

The incident is still being investigated by League City Animal Control, Williamson said. The retriever's owner was unhurt, but the severity of the injuries to the dog were unknown.

The owner of the pit bull, who lives in the subdivision where the attack happened, was cited for having an animal at large, Williamson said.

These irresponsible pet owners do not deserve to own pets. How can anyone in these days think that letting your dogs run loose it acceptable or ok in any way? The owner of the pit bull should also be required to go through some sort of training on animal ownership responsibility. A simple citation is not strong enough. [angry]

Doug, anyone on Galveston's beaches will see that a large percentage of dog owners think it's okay to let their dogs run free. It's not a majority, but it's certainly a lot.
