Galveston County health officials Wednesday announced the county’s first flu-related death as cases of the infectious disease continue to skyrocket.

A 61-year-old woman died in mid-January from the flu, though she had pre-existing health conditions, said Scott Packard, spokesman for the Galveston County Health District.

The woman’s death is the first flu-related death in the county since a child died in 2014, Packard said.

The news comes as cases of flu continue to rise in the county.

There have been more than 3,500 confirmed cases of flu this season compared to 455 in the same time period in 2016-17, officials said.
