A historic house on Avenue K was badly damaged by fire Wednesday, but the homeowner escaped, thanks to her dog.

Homeowner Marie Holmes Broussard, 54, said she discovered the fire after her poodle, Chalie, warned her that something was wrong.

The house has been in her family since it was built in the late 1800s, she said.

Responders Wednesday said they were still investigating what might have started the fire at the home that was built in 1899, according to city records.

The home is among the structures forming the Lost Bayou Historic District.

Dispatchers received a call of a house fire at about 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in the 1800 block of Avenue K, officials said.

Firefighters responded and worked to contain the fire, which eventually spread to the attic, officials said.

The house sustained significant damage, officials said. Neighboring houses to the east and west also sustained some damage.

There were no reports of injuries as of Wednesday morning, officials said.
