A 94-year-old woman and a 67-year-old man were shot and killed at a Galveston house Monday in an apparent murder-suicide, police said.
The killing happened at about 1:48 p.m. in the 6700 block of Fairway Drive, a neighborhood of mostly single-family homes between Stewart Road and Greens Bayou.
Police were called to the scene by a man to a report of possible suicide, police said. When they arrived, officers found the man lying in the backyard and the woman inside. Both had suffered gunshot wounds, Galveston police Capt. Joshua Schirard said.
Police also found a dead dog at the scene, police said.
Crime scene investigators found a shotgun near the man’s body, Schirard said.
Police did not release the names of the victims, and did not speculate on any motives related to the shooting.
Schirard said the killing was believed to be a murder-suicide, and that there was no reason to believe other people were involved.
Neighbors said the house was occupied by two people, a man and a woman they believed to be his elderly mother. There had never been any apparent problems at the house, neighbors said, adding that they only saw the older woman occasionally.
People standing outside the crime scene on Monday described hearing a banging that sounded like a hammer at about 2 p.m. A short while later, police officers made their way to the street, knocked on the door and then entered the house.
An ambulance was briefly brought to the scene, but left without taking anyone from the house, neighbors said.
The killing is the third reported murder-suicide in Galveston within the past 12 months.
In January, a Baytown woman killed her husband, two sons and herself inside a guest room at the San Luis Resort on Seawall Boulevard.
On Feb. 20, 2017, which was also Presidents Day, a 91-year-old man shot his 40-year-old wife in the chest with a small revolver before killing himself inside a house on Beluche Drive.
