Motorcyclist injured in fall from 51st Street viaduct

A motorcyclist was injured Friday, Nov. 3, 2017, after going over the guardrail on the 51st Street viaduct.

GALVESTON

Authorities transported a motorcyclist to the emergency room Friday night after he hit a guardrail on the 51st Street viaduct and fell into the water below, officials said.

The motorcyclist was heading west on Harborside Drive and struck the rear end of a Texas City Independent School District bus before losing control, Galveston Police Department Capt. Joshua Schirard said.

The viaduct is a tall overpass that carries traffic on Harborside Drive and 51st Street over a collection of railroad tracks.

Four students were on the bus at the time it was hit, but medical authorities determined they were unharmed, Texas City ISD spokeswoman Melissa Tortorici said.

The students live in Galveston but attend school in Texas City through the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act, Tortorici said.

The motorcyclist was transported to the emergency room after being rescued from the water under the bridge. His injuries are unknown, Schirard said.

Thousands of motorcyclists are in Galveston this weekend for Lone Star Rally, the largest known four-day motorcycle rally in the country. The event ends Sunday.

Anyone that rides would Know something wasn't right with this guy. It's not like a School Bus in a small object. Hope he makes it but it might be time to hang it up and drive a car.

Something like this happens every year, it's just a matter of time. Why just the other day, about 75+ bikers past my house and every one of them ran the Stop Sign across from the house. I wish I had of videoed that. They have No respect for the Rules of the Road in 77563.

Is that a blow up doll on the back of that bike in the picture?
