Train cars derail near courthouse

Grain spills from a derailed train car Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2018, in the rail yard near behind the Galveston County Justice Center in Galveston.

A group of cars derailed in a Galveston train yard on Wednesday afternoon.

The apparent accident happened at about 12:30 p.m. near 59th and Ball streets behind the Galveston County Justice Center, authorities said.

The derailment prompted a quick response from the Galveston fire and police departments, but it was quickly determined there were no injuries or dangerous substances in the cars that left the rails, Galveston Police Department spokesman Joshua Schirard said.

The train cars were carrying grain, Schirard said. No traffic was affected by the derailment.

Train cars don't just derail at slow speed.... Bad switch, bad set of rails? The whole story isn't being told....
