GALVESTON

A Galveston man was killed Tuesday afternoon when the truck he was driving plummeted off the Galveston seawall and burst into flames, police said.

The crash happened at 3:55 p.m. near the 9500 block of Seawall Boulevard.

Witnesses told police that a Chevrolet Colorado was heading east on Seawall Boulevard when it swerved left to pass another car in the same lane and went out of control, police spokesman Capt. Joshua Schirard said.

The truck flew off the road and crashed onto the rocks several feet below, officials said.

The truck was on fire when emergency responders arrived. The fire department was not able to remove the driver, who was identified as a 47-year-old Galveston resident, police said.

The driver’s identity was not immediately released.

No other vehicles were involved.

Part of Seawall Boulevard was shut down in both directions as investigators and wrecking crews cleared the accident. Traffic was diverted down Stewart Road while they did that.
