Stephen G. Bowen, a NASA astronaut, will make a special appearance during Meet a Mariner Day from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Sea Star Base Galveston, 7509 Broadway, in Galveston.

Bowen, a member of the U.S. Navy, was the first submarine officer to be selected as an astronaut by NASA. He has logged more than 40 days in space, including 47 hours and 18 minutes in seven spacewalks.

The event, which is an event of Maritime Week — May 19-22 — presented by the Galveston Regional Chamber of Commerce’s Doolin Maritime Career Pathways Committee, is a national observance and educational opportunity designed to spotlight the maritime industry and to introduce students to maritime vocations.

Attendees will get to meet professional mariners and board their vessels. Tours also will be available.
