A man has been charged in a shooting early Sunday morning in Texas City.

John Rodriguez, 55, was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and felon in possession of a firearm, police said.

Texas City police responded to the call about 8:50 a.m. in the 1000 block of 25th Avenue N., finding a man who had been shot after an apparent argument with a family member, police said.

The victim, who is the nephew of the suspect, was alert and conscious at the scene and was transported to the University of Texas Medical Branch emergency room, said Kenneth Brown, spokesman for the Texas City Police Department.

The victim, who was later identified as Martin Torrez, was struck with a single shot to the upper right chest, Brown said.

After interviewing Rodriguez, charges were brought.

Rodriguez was transported to the Galveston County Jail and was being held on $105,000 in bonds.
