La Marque police Friday were investigating a possible homicide after firefighters found an unidentified body inside an SUV engulfed in flames near Gulf Greyhound Park, officials said.

At about 6:45 a.m., crews for the La Marque Fire Department were dispatched after a report of a Ford Expedition engulfed in flames in the 5600 block of Mitchell Lane near FM 2004, police said. After arriving, emergency crews found an adult body inside the vehicle, authorities said.

The vehicle identification numbers had been scratched off the SUV, officials said.

The Galveston County Medical Examiners office on Friday afternoon was still completing an autopsy to establish a cause of death and identify the body, police said.

“Although not being ruled a homicide at this time, the investigation is being conducted as such,” La Marque police said.

Police are urging anyone with information to contact the La Marque Criminal Investigation Division at 409-938-9269 or La Marque Crime Stoppers at 409-938-8477.

Aren't there numbers on parts of the vehicle that will identify the vin number? I guess no tags on the car either. Good luck detectives. I heard you don't do fingerprints lifting anymore. Is this true? Truly, I hope you find out who the person is, and who owns the car.
