BACLIFF — Monday Sheriff’s deputies asked for the public’s help in solving the case of a pedestrian fatally struck by an automobile that left the scene.

Gerald Jackson Jr. of Bacliff was pronounced dead in the 5100 block of West Bayshore early Sunday morning. Deputies think an automobile struck him between 2:45 a.m. and 3 a.m. Maj. Ray Tuttoilmondo a Galveston County Sheriff’s Office spokesman said.

Jackson was apparently walking to his house nearby Tuttoilmondo said.

A passer-by saw a man facedown on the shoulder of the road near Ruth Street and called authorities.

”It appears he was struck by a vehicle that left the scene” Tuttoilmondo said. ”This one we’d love some help on if anyone has some information on it.”

Deputies have no information on what kind of automobile struck Jackson. There are some residences nearby. Deputies received the first call reporting it at 3:13 a.m.

”There was a resident who heard it but didn’t see it” Tuttoilmondo said.

”Right about that time a passing motorists a lady on her way home from work saw Mr. Jackson laying on the side of the road and stopped to call. We’re anticipating it happened right around 3 a.m.”

Deputies were investigating whether Jackson was in the road when he was struck.

”We don’t think so but it’s still very much under investigation” Tuttoilmondo said.
