A traffic arrest Thursday morning in Hitchcock led to the arrest of a man wanted in connection to a October assault.

The Hitchcock Police Department made a traffic stop on the 8300 block of Highway 6 at about 9:30 a.m. because of a traffic violation. The driver of the car, a woman, was arrested on misdemeanor charge of driving with a suspended license.

When police attempted to check the identity of a passenger in the car, the name he gave returned no matches, Hitchcock Police Capt. John Jenkins said.

However, dispatchers matched the man's middle name with a person wanted on a warrant. A photo sent to the officer at the traffic stop matched the passenger, Jenkins said.

Demetrius Ahmad Jones, 27, was arrested and charged with one felony count of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

The assault charge stems from an Oct. 18 incident at an apartment complex on the 6600 block of Prino Road in Hitchcock. On that day, a man reported being attacked and pistol whipped by two men who had knocked on his door.

The man identified one of his attackers as Jones, Jenkins said. A warrant was issued for his arrest after the October incident.

Jones was being held in the Galveston County Jail on $250,000 bond on Thursday.
