A Texas City man was sentenced Friday to of 35 years in prison for aggravated sexual assault of a child and possession of child pornography.
Michael Lawrence Cruz, 26, pleaded guilty to the charges in the 212th District Court. He was sentenced to 25 years in state prison for aggravated sexual assault and 10 years for possessing child pornography.
Cruz was first charged in September after an FBI investigation found him in possession of thousands of child pornography files, according to a news release. His bond was set at $80,000.
Cruz later told police he had sexually assaulted a 5-year-old girl, and the girl corroborated the story, according to the release. Cruz was charged with aggravated sexual assault of a child in October, and the bond on the child pornography charge was increased to $100,000 and another $50,000 was added to his bond as a result of the new charge.
Cruz's bond was later reduced back to $80,000 on the child pornography charge.
Cruz will have to serve at least half of his time before being eligible for parole, according to the news release. Once paroled or released, he will have to register as a sex offender for life.
