GALVESTON — A Bayou Vista man who was rushed to the hospital following an accident with a paraglider died.
Mike Turner 57 was pronounced dead at a University of Texas Medical Branch hospital Saturday night Bayou Vista police Capt. Lynn McLaren said.
About 5:20 p.m. Saturday Turner was apparently working on his aircraft which was not set up to fly at his house on Sailfish.
For some unknown reason Turner started heading down the street and the paraglider crashed into a mailbox a tree a utility box and a parked car before coming to rest against another mailbox McLaren said.
”For some reason he was not able to stop the paraglider” McLaren said.
The captain said Turner was thrown from the aircraft at some point and was found partially underneath the parked car that had been hit.
He had suffered massive head and internal injuries.
Turner was not wearing his seat belt McLaren said.
It is unknown how fast Turner was traveling when the accident occurred. It also is unknown if alcohol was involved McLaren said.
Because the paraglider is an aircraft the Federal Aviation Administration also is investigating the accident McLaren said. That investigation is ongoing.
