A technology venture capitalist and Dickinson native donated $1 million to the Dickinson Harvey Relief Fund, the city announced Wednesday.

Bill Gurley and his wife, Amy Gurley, live in San Francisco, where Bill Gurley is a general partner at Benchmark. But Bill Gurley grew up in Dickinson and graduated from high school there in 1984.

Gurley's father, John Gurley, was an early NASA employee and the family moved to Dickinson when Bill Gurley was young. His mother, Lucia Gurley, was a prominent figure in the community for more than 38 years, according to the city.

She was a substitute teacher, a library volunteer and a key contributor to Keep Dickinson Beautiful. She was also a city councilwoman for 11 years.

"Amy and I wanted to ensure that this small and vibrant community of Dickinson also has the resources it needs to rebuild," Bill Gurley wrote in a post about the donation.
