Entries are being accepted until 3 p.m. Jan. 8 for the 17th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Essay Contest, sponsored by the Galveston Historical Foundation's African-American Heritage Committee and the Old Central Cultural Center.

Galveston Island students in grades 9-12 can enter an original 350-word essay on "Be The Change." Submissions must be typed, double-spaced and contain a cover sheet with name, grade, school, home address and telephone number.

Submissions can be emailed to education@galvestonhistory.org or mailed to the Old Central Cultural Center, P.O. Box 2111, Galveston, TX 77553.

First place will receive $300, second place $200, and third place will win $100. Four honorable mentions also will receive $50 each.

Winners will read their essays at the annual reception, which will be at 3 p.m. Jan. 14 at Old Central, 2627 Ave. M, in Galveston.

Admission is free and open to the public, and a complimentary lunch also will be provided.
