The University of Texas Medical Branch will take food donations this month to settle unpaid parking citations and associated late fees.
Through Sept. 30, the medical branch will forgive single unpaid parking citations if people deliver $5 worth of food to the parking office, officials said. The office is at RSH 2.756 and will take donations from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
All food will be given to the Galveston County Food Bank, medical branch officials said. The organization is asking for whole grain pasta and rice, peanut butter, canned fruits and vegetables, canned meat, canned beans and soup, hygiene items, household items and paper products.
The food bank is also asking for fruit cups, granola bars, juice boxes, tuna packs and cereal for children, officials said. The group will take donations of nutritional shakes and drinks and adult hygiene products for seniors.
All canned goods must have pull-tab lids, and no glass will be accepted, officials said.
The parking forgiveness program does not apply to any city-issued citations, officials said.
