The American Red Cross decided to continue operating its shelter at Carbide Park in La Marque after plans were announced Thursday to move the county’s last shelter out of town, a county spokeswoman said.

The organization had considered moving it to a Lutheran church in Harris County and then Peace Lutheran Church on Emmett F. Lowry Expressway in Texas City, but the locations did not work out, a county spokeswoman said.

As of Thursday, there were about 30 people are the shelter in Carbide Park. On Friday, the county was busing in about 16 evacuees who had been sent to North Texas to the shelter.
