A failed piece of equipment at a substation was cited as the reason for a wide-spread power outage Monday evening in Dickinson.

About 12,000 customers in Dickinson, League City and Texas City lost power for up to eight hours, Eric Paul, a spokesman for Texas-New Mexico Power Co. said.

The company is still investigating the cause of the failure, Paul said.

Most power was restored by 2 a.m., Paul said, although some areas were without power until 5 a.m. or later.

"We monitor our systems for purposes of preventing unexpected problems, particularly at times when the load the system is carrying is high," Paul said.

"We wish we could say things like this will never happen, but what we can say is that they’re rare. Our engineering staff can be expected to leverage the results of its investigation in future planning."
