Authorities have identified a 9-year-old boy who died Sunday after a motor vehicle struck him while he rode a bicycle on FM 519 in La Marque.

Brejan Garrett-Powell, 9, was a fourth-grade student at La Marque Elementary School.

Principal Sharon Williams wrote a letter Wednesday to students’ parents.

“We extend our heartfelt sympathy to his family,” Williams said in the letter. “We are very sad, and we know your child might be, too. Please let your child know that it is okay to feel this way. Brejan was a kind student and a good friend to his classmates. We will miss him.”

The school’s counselor was available on campus to help students deal with the loss, Williams said.

The accident happened about 7:40 p.m. Sunday. The driver of the vehicle, a 28-year-old man, had minor injuries, and responders treated him at the scene. Police have not filed charges, Lt. Shawn Spruill said.

The La Marque Police Department Accident Reconstruction Team continues to investigate the accident.
