Construction crews will begin widening FM 646, between FM 1764 and state Highway 6 in about a month. Project officials said this would develop growth along the corridor between Hitchcock and Santa Fe.
The two-lane section of asphalt road on FM 646 will be widened to a four-lane divided roadway with turn lanes, and the $12.8 million project begins in May, Texas Department of Transportation officials said.
It is the last two-lane segment of the road between Interstate 45 and state Highway 6.
“There’s quite a bit of traffic there,” Precinct 2 County Commissioner Joe Giusti said. “With future expansion and growth, there’s really going to be a need for it.”
Santa Fe city officials have anticipated residential development in the area because as League City and Dickinson continue fast population growth, residents have nowhere to move but south. The transportation department accelerated the project and funded it because of the need, Giusti said.
Widening the last section of two-lane road on FM 646 also will lead to economic development along the state Highway 6 corridor, which runs along the western side of the county, Giusti said.
Texas Sterling Construction will begin work May 18, transportation officials said. The project is scheduled to be complete in early 2018.
