The Tremont House celebrated its 30th annual Mardi Gras Ball and Parade Viewing Party on March 1 with a Pearls and Prohibition theme.
Originated by Cynthia and George Mitchell, of happy memory, marked the grand opening of The Tremont House in 1985 and the revival of Galveston Island’s citywide Mardi Gras celebrations.
As usual Ball guests were greeted with jazz music and flappers outside the hotel by Island Jazz Project while enjoying the sounds of singer Danielle Reich in the lobby.
The Dr. Michael White Jazz Quartet from New Orleans played as guests dined to the sumptuous menu prepared by Executive Chef Michael Jacobson which featured Oysters on the Half Shell, Lobster Thermidor in Puff Pastry, Steak au Poivre, Braised Chicken with Artichokes, Lamb Chops Lollipops.
The hotel also served Prohibition Punch and an “Illegal” Lemonade concoction.
In conjunction with the Pearls and Prohibition theme, members of the Cynthia and George Mitchell family donned his favorite ensembles tying in with the theme.
Grant Mitchell and wife, Tiziana, with their darling tots in tow, Sheridan and husband, Perry Lorenz, and Greg Mitchell and wife, Betsy, were all on hand to celebrate Mardi Gras in Tremont House style.
Also seen were Lori Mitchell, Meredith Mitchell Heimburger and husband, John Heimburger, and Katina Mitchell.
Penny and Bill Ross were also seen in their favorite prohibition-inspired costumes for the event. Following an hourlong viewing of the Momus Grand Night Parade, which featured Vic Fertitta as grand marshal, passed directly in front of the hotel, guests ventured to The Tremont Ballroom which had been transformed into an elegant speak-easy. The highlight of the evening was a live performance by retro swing band Poppin’ Daddies.
