Greek Festival

Volunteers for the Greek Festival, Oct. 14-15, are celebrating delivery of Mythos Greek beer, which will be featured at the upcoming event. Volunteering to sample the delivery were Larry Kriticos, Tommy Choate, Nick Voris and Baytown guest Jeff Miller. They reported that the beer will be in ample supply at the festival, along with incredible food and pastries, and encourage their friends and neighbors to attend the event. Opa!

In 1914, a group of women led by Frances Kirk, the superintendent of drawing for the Galveston city schools, gathered at Ball High School to form an organization dedicated to supporting the visual arts in Galveston. That organization, the Galveston Art League, is still going strong.

This year, the art league’s annual gala, “Inspired! Art for the Ages, Art for all Ages” will pay homage to those women by recognizing five local art teachers — Regina Bishop, Dr. Stephen Duncan, Joan Finn, JoNell Fuste and Colleen Moore — as representatives of today’s school art programs.

The gala will be 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Sept. 30, at the San Luis Hotel Grand Ballroom.

Guests will be able to enjoy cocktails, dinner, and entertainment provided by Sparky Koerner and his jazz band.

In addition to honoring the school art programs, there will be a raffle, live and silent auctions featuring a week-long stay in Puerto Rico, and pieces from some of the area’s finest artists.

Don Nelson, longtime ABC 13 television personality, will serve as master of ceremonies. Margo Donaldson Snider, president of the art league, said attendees are invited to come dressed as their favorite individual from a painting or as a favorite artist. Cocktail attire also is welcome.

Individual tickets are $150. Sponsorships that include tables for 10 and program advertisements start at $2,500.

Members of the art league are collecting supplies for the art education programs that will be donated to the honorees to share with their respective schools.
