Hurricane Harvey did not just bring flooding, rain and wind — it brought serious challenges to our area animal shelters. The Galveston Island Humane Society was physically spared from direct damage, but immediately went to work assisting our neighbor shelters with animal intake, care and management. During the storm response, we allocated staffing and both physical and financial resources to help other organizations pick up the pieces.

In the midst of Hurricane Harvey’s chaos, the humane society’s board of directors made the difficult decision to reschedule our 17th annual Paws Gala, the largest fundraising event hosted each year by GIHS. Now we need your help!

For more than 36 years, the humane society has been dedicated to promoting animal welfare and the protection and prevention of unwanted or homeless animals. We are committed to finding homes for all animals and educating our Galveston community about pet care and the importance of spaying and neutering.

The Paws Gala, along with other events and initiatives, furthers this mission each year, providing the funding necessary to give vital services and health care to homeless and unwanted animals. Your contributions through the gala go directly to feed, shelter and provide medical care to the thousands of precious faces we see enter the shelter each year.

We need your support for the 17th annual Paws Gala, themed “20,000 Paws Under the Sea.”

Our gala will be from 6:30 p.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday at the Galveston Island Convention Center, 5600 Seawall Blvd., in Galveston. This exciting event features an open bar, seated dinner, a live and silent auction and incredible live entertainment by The Fab Five. Guests will view exquisitely decorated, themed vignettes showcasing our Elite Pet Owners and their furry companions. Ask anyone — Paws Gala is “the best” party of the year! You will not want to miss it.

Hurricane Harvey showed us that we are “Texas Strong” — now let’s have some fun and support the hard work of the Galveston Island Humane Society.
