What began as one cart of books for sale in the Rosenberg Library in early 2004 has evolved into the spacious Friends Book Shop and Reading Room 10 years later.
The Friends of the Rosenberg Library has been selling gently used donated books at the annual fall book sale for more than 40 years. The increasing number of donated books 10 years ago led them to open a book shop and start selling books year-round.
Throughout the years, more book carts were added and sales continued to grow until Hurricane Ike hit in September 2008, and many books were destroyed. Fortunately, other libraries and individuals from Texas and other states made generous book donations and the book shop was back in business when the library reopened Jan. 1, 2009.
On March 1, 2011, the friends moved the book carts onto shelves on the library’s second floor and the area officially became the Friends Book Shop.
The book shop offers books for adults and children in all categories of fiction and nonfiction. Prices start at only $2. Cash or personal checks are accepted for purchases at the circulation desk. Hours of operation are from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays at 2310 Sealy Ave. in Galveston.
“Every dollar from the multitude of books sold every year is donated to the Rosenberg Library for the purchase of new books, audio books, music CDs, DVDs, etc.,” said Cheryl Jenkines, president of the friends board.
“We encourage the community to visit the book shop. These books make great gifts for the book lovers on your Christmas shopping list or other occasions throughout the year.”
The friends welcome donated books in clean and readable condition. Please drop your books off at the first floor circulation desk.
For large donations, please phone the library at 409-763-8854 for drop-off information.
