- In 1964, bids for construction of a tourist hotel on the Galveston Pleasure Pier were opened.
- In 1989, a Galveston County prisoner undergoing treatment at John Sealy Hospital escaped from the sixth floor when guards left him briefly unattended. Later that day, he remained at large.
